Mingus Awareness Project

Mingus Awareness ProjectSaturday, August 10thAll Agesw// No Bs Brass Band   // Michael Hawkins and the Brotherhood Mingus Awareness Project concerts have been presented since 2007 — in Richmond, VA (Balliceaux, The Camel, CenterStage Rhythm Hall and Firehouse Theatre); and the Chicago area (Velvet Lounge, FitzGerald’s, Jazz Showcase, Hideout, HotHouse and Martyrs’). Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS), is a rapidly progressive disease that causes muscle weakness, difficulty speaking and swallowing and, generally, complete paralysis. In most cases, while the body continues to deteriorate, the mind remains unaffected. The disease does not discriminate, striking any age, gender and race. Every 90 minutes, someone in the US is diagnosed with ALS and every 90 minutes, someone in the US dies of ALS. There is no known cure for ALS and, once diagnosed, patients typically live only three to five years. NOBS Brass: Founders Reggie Pace and Lance Koehler have cast this 11-piece band in which nearly every member has had conservatory training, holding various degrees in music. In putting together the compositions and arrangements, the “b.s.” has been stripped to give the audience something solid, unique, organic, real, and powerful. They have the look of New Orleans with the raw sound all their own — music is a true definition of the “Richmond sound.” Based in Richmond, Virginia, No BS! Brass Band has quickly earned a reputation as a premiere band to see for heart-pounding energy and uncontrollable dancing. They take their music into uncharted territory, embracing the spirit of New Orleans into its original East Coast modern funk and fearlessly combining elements of James Brown, John Coltrane, Michael Jackson, and Led Zeppelin into their fiercely original sound. Michael Hawkins and The BrotherhoodMichael Hawkins, a charismatic bassist based in Richmond, Virginia, has performed with jazz legends like Jimmy Heath, Eric Alexander, and Gary Bartz. He’s toured internationally and played at prestigious venues such as The Village Vanguard in New York City. Locally, his band “Michael Hawkins and the Brotherhood” is a top jazz ensemble in RVA. Since 2018, they’ve been wowing audiences across the Richmond area and beyond.   https://www.michaelhawkinsmusic.com/

Long Beach Dub Allstars

Long Beach Dub Allstarsw/ Iriespect & Soundwave Supply Co.Tuesday, July 9thDoors 7:30pm | 18+ Long Beach Dub Allstars have always taken chances and have never been afraid to chart into unknown musical territory.  “Echo Mountain High” sees them experimenting with some heavy psychedelics and finds the band playing some hard classic dub anthems along with some wild experiments, showcasing the band’s free spirit and fearlessness to venture into the unknown. Opie Ortiz describes the sound “I feel with the self-titled album, it was an old-time vibe we were going for, and Cameron Webb has more of a punk-rock approach. This new album has more of a soul feel to it, and we experimented with a bunch of sounds like Roger playing a mellotron on ‘Fly So High’, which gave it a sort of Beatles ‘Strawberry Fields’ vibe. ” Joining the Dub Allstars on this mind-altering musical journey are Chris Dowd (Fishbone), who adds his trombone flavor to one track, some sweet vocals on another and some of his iconic keys on two others. Devin Morrison (Expanders/Man Like Devin) and Jesse Wagner (Aggrolites), lend some singing on a few tracks. Philieano (Doobie Raider) jumps on two tracks to rap and sing some harmonies, and local Long Beach ripper, Travis Goertz, plays a little slide guitar on one track. The album’s first single “Precious Time” was inspired by the 2011 Tōhoku earthquake and tsunami that took the lives of nearly 16,000 people and injured thousands of others. Frontman Opie Ortiz was visiting when the earthquake happened and the harrowing experience stuck with him. “I was there when it happened visiting my brother  Philieano, but luckily we were on the west side in Nagasaki,” he remembers. “It was a real eye opener being in a different country in a state of emergency. I was speaking with a person in our crew who played guitar with the One Big Family Band, his name is Yuichiro Oku, and he said I should write a song and call it ‘Precious Time’ because time is precious.” Today’s generation of reggae-rock fans may not fully understand how critical this group was to the reggae-rock genre, following Sublime’s conclusion in 1996. They played at a time when social media was non-existent. Live-videos of their early performances are mostly of grainy VHS quality, while most live-photos shot by fans were with throw-away cameras. There was no Youtube, Facebook, and this was before Myspace or even iTunes. They were the torch bearers of a genre that Sublime introduced and the original ‘Dub Allstars lineup included most of the players who were involved in cultivating that Reggae-Rock sound with Brad Nowell. Seeing them reunite and perform new music after a 15-year absence is exciting. Together these musical professors and legends from Long Beach have engineered a new studio album that adds to the legacy of Long Beach Dub Allstars. 25 years later the band has found its resurgence with Opie Ortiz(vocals), Miguel Happoldt (guitar), Tim Wu (horns) joined by Roger Rivas (keys), Ed Kampwirth (bass) and Gil Sharone(drums).

Jimmie’s Chicken Shack

moved from Saturday, August 3rd 2024 Jimmie’s Chicken ShackSaturday, January 25th 2025Doors: 7pm | 18+ Jimmie’s Chicken Shack is an American alternative rock band from Annapolis, Maryland. They emerged through MTV as one of the first post-grunge bands of the era. Blending funk-metal with elements of ska and reggae while also demonstrating surprising acoustic prowess, lead vocalist Jimi Haha grew up in Maryland where he played with the group Ten Times Big. After that band broke up, he snowboarded for two years before beginning several acoustic jams with friends. These coalesced into Jimmie’s Chicken Shack. Based in Annapolis, MD, the group formed their own Fowl Records, which became a nexus for the leading bands in the tri-state area. After selling tens of thousands of records, Jimmie’s Chicken Shack signed to Elton John’s Rocket Records and released two major-label albums, Pushing the Salmanilla Envelope and Bring Your Own Stereo. Both albums enjoyed chart, radio, and MTV success and produced their best known hits “High” and “Do Right.” The band subsequently released two more albums Re.Present and Fail on Cue independently. The band has been a fixture on the touring circuit and is renowned for its high energy live performances.
